A Day Late

Chapter: Autumn 1911, Ulthar's Emissary
Characters: Dr. Hanson Hargrave, Winston Coward
Location: Robert Carter Memorial Hall
This lecture has been drastically simplified to fit into limited speech balloons. And it’s still pretty wordy.
I hope this helps with Everyone Is Cryptic!
EDIT: I hope this helps even more now that I fixed the Templar cipher key that I actually used to encode the message.
Ask yourself Winston, am I really here?
I’ve seen those symbols before, but I cannot remember where. I don’t think it was in any of Lovecraft’s work although he used ancient codes as McGuffins in his stories. I’m going to sit in on the lecture and see what happens.
GOT IT!!! Clever. Took some heavy thought, but two aspirin later, I have the plain text.
Hmm… maybe causing pain shouldn’t be the entertainment value I provide!
I just forgot to stretch my imagination before I got started.
Isn’t that the song everyone’s singing from the Lego Movie? “Everyone is Cryptic!!”
(har har!) 🙂
oh man, I’ve got it in plain text, and even applied a couple of other ciphers, but WOW am I still confused!
Fear not, all will be made clear(er) soon!
I translated the original message to text using the Templar cipher. Gibberish. I then applied the reversed alphabet. Still gibberish. I suspect there is a third step, translation from a foreign language, but if so I’m not there yet.
The phrase on the board is in Latin, and has a meaningful translation. Is that also a clue?
Otherwise I’m stumped. Having fun with this (I’ve got a basement to rearrange, books to keep, stuff to update) so I’m short of time for fun.
You’ve gotten as far as I would expect anyone who hasn’t gone completely insane could get (I’m looking at you, eddi). The language in question is not exactly taught in schools. And the Latin just proves Hargrave’s point. If I were really turning the strip into a puzzle hunt, I would have used the phrase “alex rubeum”.
I can’t believe that’s what my name means in Latin!
They mocked me at the University. Called me mad! Ha! Mad! But you know, given recent events, they might have been right.
My mind and soul were corrupted at an early age by the original Addams Family TV series. And my parents bought the Charles Addams collections for me. Ya gotta love folks like that. Subverting the dominate paradigm when I was still in grade school.
Oh dear God. I just discovered why my day job is not code building.
Ummm… I’ll be modifying today’s comic to show the proper key for the Templar Cipher–or at least the version I actually used to encode the message. Basically, the dots are in the wrong grids.
*tail between legs*
Man, y’all are waaaaay too smart for me (including Alex). I’m just gonna wait for it to unfold.
