Chapter: Autumn 1911, Good Night Ladies
Characters: Humphrey Love, Winston Coward
Location: Copley Tower, Orne Library
Idioms do make language usage more diverse and creative, but it’s a wonder sometimes that we understand anything in English the first time through.
Then again, if English was straightforward, half of my punchlines wouldn’t work.
Humphrey read Slowloader’s comment I see. It will be interesting to see just how he intends to get to the library roof.
Broomsticks? Oops, wrong school.
Ran across a saying awhile back:
Polish has no vowels
Hawaiian has no consonants
English has no sense
Woohoo! Right for once! Of course, once in the library, then they’ll just be stuck in there. Hmm, stuck forever in a library. Not so bad, assuming there are snacks somewhere.
In regards to English and it’s lack of straitforwardness, I’m reminded of an old Murphy’s Rules. To wit: “In Runequest III, two people from the same village, speaking the same language, have a 1 in 3 chance of totally misunderstanding each other.”
In real life if they are a married couple the chance is 2 in 3.
I’m not sure what you mean.
