To Boldly Go

To my knowledge, this is everyone’s experience exploring a cruise ship on the first day. Which way is forward? What deck am I on? Where is anything?
There should probably be more explanatory signs on the walls here. He is in a maze of twisty passages, all alike. He is likely to be eaten by a grue.
Most of the signs would be highly unhelpful letter-number combinations intended for the crew. Whose first task is to memorize the vital routes from their bunk to the head, the mess room and their duty station. Upstairs there would be signs to various areas like the dining rooms, pool halls and Turkish baths. As the lower decks did not have those luxuries, the passengers were shown the places they were allowed to go. Wandering was usually discouraged. Their dining areas were also the entertainment centers.
Ooh, nice bit of info! Do you have a source you could point me to, by chance?
