Chapter: Broken Or Fixed, Spring 1912
Characters: Stanford Ruthers, Winston Coward
Location: Miskatonic Campus
Anyone who knows Winston better get used to the idea of getting into more trouble when he does stuff. It’s my job to make that happen.
Winston is standing up to some real monsters here. Good for him. Stanford’s position is quite reasonable for the times. Trying to fight the system can result in death or injury back then. The mere fact he is a MU is a win.
White saviour’s gonna do what a White Saviour’s gotta do, right? Even when told to back off. As I mentioned elsewhere, I’d rather deep kiss a Deep One than tackle a racist, but as there aren’t that many Deep Ones in our reality,
it isn’t a choice but a mandate.
I want to come to Winston’s defense here. He may or may not be playing white savior depending on his motivation (which I have the advantage of knowing…er, sometimes), but is he actually going about it the wrong way? Shouldn’t it be the responsibility of those who perpetuate a systemic problem to try to repair the system? It might be a problem if Winston reforms the Honor Society and then expects Stanford to be grateful, but I feel like he is still doing the right thing to give the next batch of disadvantaged students more options.
But if I’m looking at this wrong, I am open to being educated!
With a name like “Finnan Gilman” it’s obvious what he wants: Lilliana.
Keen ear!
