The Bibliophile’s Nightmare
This is the closest Winston will ever get to Amazon.
I actually had a dream like this once when I was a kid. It was the ultimate toy store and I got to pick out whatever I wanted. While I was paralyzed by my infinite options, I woke up. Eventually that dream was destined to become a pretty good metaphor for being interested in too many different things and never settling on doing one for a living.
My actual experience that came closest to Winston’s (without the inevitable disappointment!) was a visit to Powell’s book store in Portland, Oregon. It’s a very very good thing I don’t live there or I would be immediately broke.
I used to live in Portland. Powell’s was a regular stop. And I still dream about it. Except it becomes a version of Borges’ Infinite Library. Winston is lucky to get that close. If I remember the library at Celaeno is frequently a one-way trip.
Always waking up at the good part…
You should totally live there. Powell’s is definitely a religious experience
